Poor Alice's actual birthday wasn't the greatest. She woke up not feeling very well and Bruce and I struggled with what to do. We didn't want her to realize that being sick gets you out of school, because that could turn into an nightmare, but if she really wasn't feeling well I didn't want to send her to school. We finally decided to send her on to school and hope she felt better once she started getting up and moving. Well, it was time to get off the couch and get shoes on and as soon as she got up, she rushed to the bathroom because she felt like she was going to throw up. No throw up, but at that point, I decided I really couldn't send her on the bus with an upset stomach. I pulled out the school handbook and talked to her about how she's not allowed to miss too many days of school and it's very important that if she feels better at any point, that I'd drive her to school. I then make her 'rest' in her room the whole day. Every time she came down saying she felt better, I'd say, ok, let's get on over to school then. Then she would say she wasn't quite up to that and go back to her room. So, because we were so worried about Alice faking being sick, the poor girl had to spend 5 hours bored to death in her room on her birthday. I tried to make it up to her that evening with her favorite food--pizza--and homemade chocolate cupcakes, but still felt pretty bad.
Though after that I expected other attempts to get out of school by being 'sick,' Alice really hasn't had any problems. She's super shy (for example, she won't talk to any of the kids--she just shakes her head yes or no if they ask her a question) but is seeming to enjoy school and the anxiety of being in a new environment is slowly wearing off.
