I think I can...

Well, after quite a bit of research and visits to multiple stores, we finally found a pot that would work on a glass top stove. Bruce and I did apple pie filling together about a week ago and I did spiced apple rings yesterday. I think before the season ends I'm going to do some plain apples in light syrup and then another round of apple pie filling (which, we discovered, is delicious on waffles). Tom, the owner, is coming out every day now to pick apples to sell to a pig farmer. It makes me sad to think good apples are going to pigs! Give them the rotten ones I say. Speaking of pigs, there's a pig farm down the road about a mile that lets there pigs graze in a field. I'm not sure if they eat grass or not, but it's just funny to see pigs out in a field like cows. I'll have to take a picture sometime.

Yesterday, I pulled out all of the hand-me-downs we'd gotten to see what kind of winter clothes we had for Alice and what we needed to start looking for. I was pleasantly surprised to find 13 long sleeved shirts, a heavy coat, hat, and mittens, and a couple of pairs of pants, shoes and a jacket. Thanks everyone!

Below is Alice helping me sort through the clothing. I had found last year's Halloween costume upstairs and wanted to see if it still fit. We might use it again this year and just find some green pants/tights for her to wear. I might have to sew on the peas though because they're just too fun for her to pull off!

I might be the last person to have heard about this, but I thought I'd pass it on anyway. There's a website called Freecycle where you can post things you want to get rid of and people in your area can check the postings, and if they want it, they contact you and then come pick it up. For instance, we are sick and tired of the white couch in this picture (it's sitting in our dining room b/c it doesn't fit anywhere else) so I think I might post it next week. We thought about hauling it to a consignment shop but I would rather give it away for free and have someone come pick it up! Anyways, you can also post a message on freecycle if you want something, to see if anyone would be willing to give it to you. I've found it interesting to just read the posts and see what people are willing to give away--bicycles, pets, diet pills, picnic tables, children's clothing, etc.

Below is one of the outfits we made with the wonderful hand-me-downs people gave us. Everything but the jeans are hand-me-downs (I got the jeans for $3.00 on clearance at Wal-mart). The only way Alice will wear socks (she'll pull them off immediately) is if she has shoes on.

Today I found out that shoes serve another great purpose. We went to baby storytime at the library and Alice kept on trying to get the toys of a baby behind us and was getting upset because she couldn't play with them. I didn't bring any toys because I didn't want there to be any distractions from the stories and activities, so to avoid a tantrum, I distracted Alice by taking off her shoes and letting her play with them. Of course, the socks popped off almost immediately, but at least we didn't have to leave storytime.

I love hand-me-downs...especially for babies and little kids. I received the cutest clothes that were hardly worn down...so we can save money for other things!

It sounds like you guys are settling in well. There is snow on the mountains here--we kind of skipped fall!

Hand me downs are a life saver that is for sure!! A friend gave me a giant bag of clothes before Asher was born (she was due close to me but they were boy clothes from her sister and she was having a girl she found out, I never opened it up to look at but the other week I checked in and found it was all pristine Gap, Old Navy and Osh Kosh. Everythinf we would need for the whole winter. It was such a blessing.

P.S. I am so impressed that you are canning and being creative with all your apple produce! You are so amazing at that kind of thing!
